  14. <p>     DIED. Thomas Stanley ("T.S.") Matthews, 89, critic,
  15. novelist, biographer, poet, journalist and, from 1943 to 1949,
  16. managing editor of TIME; in Cavendish, England. Born in
  17. Cincinnati, Matthews graduated from Princeton and New College,
  18. Oxford, and joined TIME in 1929 as books editor. When TIME
  19. co-founder Henry R. Luce named him to lead the magazine through
  20. the war and postwar period, Matthews responded with
  21. characteristic candor: "1) I am married, and TIME is not the
  22. name of my wife. 2) I am not yet completely licked as a writer.
  23. 3) I hate the Republican Party. 4) As a reader and as a writer,
  24. I consider TIME badly written..." His editing could be
  25. merciless. "Choctaw! Try it again in English" was penciled on
  26. one convoluted effort. Matthews' 15 books include Name and
  27. Address: An Autobiography, critical studies of English essayist
  28. Charles Lamb and the poet T.S. Eliot and O My America! Notes
  29. on a Trip.
